Is CBD good for fitness? Whether you’re a runner, cyclist, yogi, weight lifter, gym enthusiast or any type of athlete, you may want to give CBD a try. But before you do, it’s a good idea to look into the science behind CBD, cannabis, and fitness.
While research is still ongoing and there’s a lot more to learn, here’s some of the research that points toward CBD being a great addition to your fitness journey.
Published in July 2020, a recent study showed that cannabis use may be associated with lower BMI and a higher frequency of exercise in seniors. This study is titled “Exercise intervention outcomes with cannabis users and nonusers aged 60 and older,” and is published in the American Journal of Health and Behavior.
Throughout the study of approximately 200 participants, researchers compared the BMIs and exercise routines of cannabis users with those of control participants. Results showed that the seniors who used cannabis tended to have lower BMIs and they engaged in exercise more often. Many of these people also increased their physical activity throughout the course of the study. The results seem to align with a few other studies that also show a link between cannabis use, BMI, and exercise behavior.
Whether you’re a bodybuilder making gains or a runner training for your next event, you understand the importance of rest. Recovery after exercise is just as important as the workout itself! When you allow your body to recover after a tough workout, you can get stronger and feel better, both mentally and physically.
CBD works with the endocannabinoid system to help your body in many ways. It can have analgesic effects (reducing pain) which can help with the soreness you may feel after a workout. It can help with sleep, which may aid in muscle recovery. As CBD acts upon your endocannabinoid receptors, it supports many of the functions that are necessary for your muscles and ligaments to rest and repair themselves between workouts.
CBD and marijuana have a reputation for causing relaxation. Some people may worry that using cannabis will reduce their energy levels, but many users find that it has the opposite effect. They report that using CBD helps them to get deeper, more restful sleep while also being more focused and productive throughout the day. When you get plenty of rest, you’ll feel more active and ready to tackle your next workout.
One way CBD can help with rest is by reducing levels of the “stress hormone.” This 2011 double-blind study is one of many that suggest CBD is adept at suppressing the secretion of cortisol – the hormone that is associated with stress and restlessness.
