As a whole, we’ve made huge strides in human health and wellness. Millions of researchers, scientists, and medical professionals are constantly advancing what we know about health and medicine. But despite this, the COVID-19 pandemic has thrown us all for a loop. COVID is extremely contagious and widespread, and it has such a wide range of symptoms that it can be difficult to detect. While researchers are working overtime to develop a vaccine, we don’t yet have a great way to prevent the virus.
Understandably, many people are looking to alternative therapies such as cannabis. We know that cannabis and CBD work closely with the immune system. As of yet (July 2020) we have no proof that CBD or cannabis will fight or prevent COVID-19. However, there are some theories that point toward it being a useful tool for preventing the coronavirus.
In Canada, a team of researchers has been developing a new strain of cannabis for several years. The researchers initially started developing the strain to fight cancer and inflammatory diseases. But when COVID struck, they started focusing that instead. In April, the team published a paper in Preprints, an online medical journal.
“Similar to other respiratory pathogens, SARS-CoV2 is transmitted through respiratory droplets, with potential for aerosol and contact spread. It uses receptor-mediated entry into the human host via angiotensin-converting enzyme II (ACE2) that is expressed in lung tissue, as well as oral and nasal mucosa, kidney, testes, and the gastrointestinal tract. Modulation of ACE2 levels in these gateway tissues may prove a plausible strategy for decreasing disease susceptibility.”
In other words, COVID spreads through respiratory droplets and infects new patients via “gateways” throughout the body (in the nose, mouth, lungs and more). As their theory goes, using certain strains of cannabis may help to “close the gateways” against the virus, allowing for a higher rate of prevention.
If this cannabis strain proves to be useful, it could be made into medical formulations or other CBD/cannabis-based products. Some of these formulas may be available for home use, like your average CBD product – only better at fighting the pandemic!
While this paper was not peer reviewed and is only a preliminary theory, it is the type of work we need to see in the scientific community. We already know from multiple studies that cannabis can have striking effects in the human body, particularly the immune system. Cannabis researchers are doing us all a great service by researching its effectiveness against COVID-19.
It’s useful to note that not all strains of cannabis are equal. We simply don’t yet know which strains have the potential to help with COVID-19. The best thing to do, as always, is to purchase from reputable brands that are open and transparent about their products and their growing methods.
Some CBD brands allow you to select from a variety of strains, while others handpick the best based on lab results and research. Either way, when you purchase from a trustworthy CBD brand, you’re setting yourself up for a higher level of success when it comes to your immune health.
