Holiday Baking with Cannabis

by David Bray

Edibles are becoming more varied and widespread than ever before. There’s the classic pot brownie, of course, but now you can find CBD and cannabis in just about every food and beverage possible. The best thing is, you can easily make edibles at home. That means you can make your holiday baking even more fun and stress-relieving than ever!

How to Infuse Butter or Oil with Cannabis

By infusing butter or oil with your herb, you can get all the “goodness” out of the plant while leaving the fibrous bit behind. Cannabutter is a classic choice for making cookies and other holiday treats, but if your recipe calls for oil or you follow a plant-based diet, then oil will work equally well! To infuse butter, here’s what to do:

  • You’ll need the following ingredients: 1 cup of butter, 1 cup of dry herb, and 1 cup of water.
  • This step is important: gently heat the herb in your oven at around 245 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 to 40 minutes. This is called decarbing. It allows you to get the best effects from the marijuana plant.
  • Once the herb is decarbed, grind it coarsely with a hand grinder.
  • Melt 1 cup of butter and 1 cup of water over low heat in a saucepan or stockpot. The water will help guard against scorching.
  • Add in the coarsely-ground cannabis and simmer at 160 to 200 degrees F for about 2 hours, stirring occasionally. It is very important to keep it in this temperature range and watch it to make sure it doesn’t boil.
  • Once it’s cool, strain the cannabutter using a funnel and cheesecloth. Resist the urge to squeeze the cheesecloth after straining, because this can add a stronger cannabis flavor to the butter and you may not want that in your cookies.
  • Refrigerate your cannabutter until it is all used up!

How to Make Edibles for a Sweet (Medicated) Treat

The best thing about making cannabutter or cannabis-infused oil? You can add it to any regular recipe! If you have a favorite family recipe that needs a little something extra, use the recipe as written but replace the regular butter/oil with your homemade infused version.

Chocolate treats work especially well with the flavor of cannabis! If you make a milder flavored treat, like Christmas sugar cookies, you’re more likely to taste the herbal flavor of the cannabis. For these recipes, you may want to reduce the amount of time that you simmer your cannabutter.

How to Safely Consume Homemade Edibles

If you are using CBD flower with little to no THC, then there’s not as much to worry about. But if your herb contains THC, you will need to be very careful about how many Christmas cookies you eat! Start with a very small amount at first (just one bite is recommended) because you will not know how potent your cannabutter is and how it will affect you. After an hour, you will be able to feel effects so you can better judge the potency.
