What are earthworm castings?
Basically, they are worm poop. Poop that is teaming with microbes, beneficial bacteria, and essential nutrients all comprised of organic material. This poop increases organic matter levels in soils and improves soil nutrient content without contributing excess nutrients.
Why should I use worm castings?
Worm castings help build soil structure and promote healthy soil by adding essential nutrients that may be lacking or have been used up by plant growth. They do this by increasing microbial activities and soil organics which leads to improved plant health. You can even make compost tea with them.
Worm castings don’t burn plants. Unlike synthetic fertilizers and some organic fertilizers, worm castings are easy for plants to tolerate. The nutrition has been pre-digested by the worms. This makes it immediately ready for your cannabis plants to uptake by the plant roots.
They’re rich in micronutrients. While worm casting's NPK value is relatively low, they bring a lot of other mineral content with them, ie. trace elements such as calcium, manganese, copper, and iron are just a few of the 60-odd micronutrients preset in castings.
Castings increase plant yield. Microorganisms thrive in castings. For most organic gardens, microbial populations are essential. They can help your plants draw up nutrients more easily. Your plants will be bigger and produce better.
They protect the soil from diseases. Many fungal-based plant diseases don’t thrive in soil rich in worm castings. The bacteria and beneficial microbes in the castings can kill off dangerous fungi. Seedlings experience less damping-off. Some fungal and bacterial diseases are also greatly reduced in scope.
Pests are repelled by earthworm castings! Aphids, spider mites, scale insects, mites, and whiteflies avoid them. By adding castings to your soil’s surface, you can reduce the populations of these pests. Mulching with castings also provides constant fertilization when you water.
Soil moisture is improved. Worm castings can hold up to 90% of their weight in water. Soil structure with greater organic matter and microbial activity can retain substantially more water.
How do I use earthworm castings?
You can apply worm castings by blending them into your potting mix prior to filling your containers, top dressing at the soil surface, or making compost tea and either water or foliar spray onto your plants during the vegetative growth cycle. You should never use chemical fertilizers with worm castings as the salts will kill the biological activities added by the worm's enzymatic activities.
You can build your own super soil by adding other organic materials such as blood meal, bone meal, feather meal, kelp meal, select animal manures, and other organic matter from compost piles. You can even make your own compost from grass clippings, wood chips, wood ash, and fresh manures. Just remember to never use anything that has been treated with chemical pesticides or herbicides as they can remain in the soil for a long time and harm your cannabis plants.
